What is a practice mental health worker (POH-GGZ)?
A practice mental health worker (POH-GGZ) is a healthcare professional with extensive knowledge in mental health care. They work at general practitioner (GP) practices and help people with psychological issues.
What can a POH-GGZ do for you?
They assist individuals facing problems like stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, or social issues. Together with the patient, they evaluate the situation and decide on a plan, which could involve a referral to a psychologist or mental health institution or scheduling a series of consultations with the POH-GGZ (typically 5 sessions of 45 minutes).
The POH-GGZ can help with:
- Clarifying your problem and questions
- Explaining the complaints and possible solutions
- Advising on treatments or referrals
- Providing support through conversations and short treatments
- Offering help during waiting periods for mental health treatments (bridging care)
- Aftercare following mental health treatment
The GP remains involved and responsible for care. A POH-GGZ is not a doctor and cannot prescribe medication.
Confidentiality and record-keeping
The POH-GGZ uses the same system as the GP and has access to your medical records. Like the GP, the POH-GGZ has a duty of confidentiality.
How to make an appointment with a POH-GGZ?
You can make an appointment by calling the practice assistants or through the patient portal by selecting “triage psychological complaints.” During the initial 15-minute conversation, the POH-GGZ will assess your situation and potential next steps. The GP may also suggest an appointment with the POH-GGZ.
Costs
Appointments with a POH-GGZ are covered by basic health insurance without affecting your deductible. This means it costs you nothing.
Canceling an appointment
Please cancel appointments only if absolutely necessary. If you cannot attend, notify the practice at least 24 hours in advance to allow someone else to take your slot. If you cancel late or do not show up, you will receive a bill that cannot be reimbursed by your health insurance.
